About Us
We have been owned by Collies for close to forty years, starting with a sable girl named Can.Ch.Ceeseven Twilight CD. Mieke was never bred, but taught me a lot! The first Tallywood litter was born in 1982, the same year our kennel name was registered with the Canadian Kennel Club What a journey these dogs have taken us on!
We usually have but one or two litters a year and are proud to have produced over one hundred Canadian, over forty American and Mexican champions from these few puppies. In addition, many Tallywood Collies are Herding Instinct Certified, have their Temperament Test degree, are Canine Good Neighbours and some have done very well in obedience. We even have two dogs with their Tracking titles, thanks to Donna Brinkworth and an Agility titled dog (way to go Diego and Lynn!) We have the honor of owning the top Best in Show winning smooth collies of all time in Canada, and have had seven generations of Best In Show collies. Our smooths have attained #1 status in Canada eight times to date. Our rough Collies have won major awards at the Collie Club of Canada National specialty, and we have had the honor of winning Best in Specialty there three times. In 2001 we were honored by the distinction of gong Winners Bitch and Best of Winners at the Collie Club of American National specialty on Am.Can.Tallywood Transcendence, a blue rough bitch. In 2004 we took our first all breed Best In Show with a rough courtesy of Ch.Tallywood At First Light, a nine month old puppy!! In 2006, Am.Can.Ch.Tallywood Fashionista ended the year as the #6 Rough Collie in the US! The jewel on our show crown came in 2008, when Am.Can.Ch.Tallywood Transcendental CGN RN was awarded the coveted Best Of Breed at the Collie Club of American National Specialty. In 2010 Am.Can.Ch.Tallywood Paradox CGN was Winners dog at the Collie Club of America, and in 2011 Am.Can.Ch.Tallywood Motivation was RWD! Am.Can.Ch.Tallywood Temperance HC CGN was # 1 Collie in Canada in 2007, and Am.Can.Ch.Tallywood Motivation was #1 Rough in 2012. We are just as proud of our many pets who never see the show ring, but make strong contributions to families all over the country. There are Tallywood Collies all over Canada and the United States.
Puppies at Tallywood are raised in the house, aided by our two toy poodles and too many cats. From early on pups are socialized to people, cats and animals as we feel an outgoing temperament is a must. Our puppies are raised on twenty acres outside of Innisfail and spend a lot of time romping in the pasture, which helps to build strong, sturdy bodies and inquisitive natures.
A Tallywood Collie can represent seven generations of our own breeding or be a first generation outcross. Our foundation stock is from the great Gambit Collies in California, which descended from Kanebriar. One of our most important outcrosses came when we bred to Ch.Southland's Bowen Island ROM, which further refined our vision. Our dogs are known for beautiful outlines, skull, profile, strong bodies, sound movement and outgoing attitudes.
We always thanks those who gave us so much, starting with James Campbell of Cambellyn Collies - one of Canada's greatest all breed handlers and someone who was very kind to a teenager. Next came Judie Keenan from Keenhaven Collies, Idaho, who gave us our start with her linebred Lick Creek dogs. The amazing Ch.Kanebriar Gambit Indeed CD caught our breath and gave us the mental picture that is so important, and a friendship with her owners, Linda Hash and Barbara Hash was the next very important step. The twins were kind enough to share some of their best, and gave us a strong foundation to carry on from. An outcross to Clarion gave us some beautiful dogs but more importantly a friendship with Judie Evans who continues to this day. Susan Bertrand of Rainforest fell in love with a smooth bitch - Am.Can.Ch.Tallywood Crossheart Windswept, and the co-ownership of her daughter Am.Can.Ch.Tallywood Rainforest Radiant Can. ROMX started an amazing friendship. Sue is the Chief Operating Officer for Tallywood and we couldn't do without her.
On the smooth side, we would never have become involved with this wonderful variety without the generosity of Ramana Boulter, Crossheart Collies. By sharing Ch. Crossheart Wings Of A Dove TT, Am. Can. Mex. Int. SKC. Ch. Crossheart Machine Gun Kelly HC and Am. Can. Ch. Crossheart Moonlight Raid HC TT, she has gave us a strong and beautiful foundation for our smooths.
We lost Ramana in August 2000, just a week after our most important co-bred litter was born. We can never begin to thank her for everything she did, and probably didn't tell her often enough how much she meant to us, but somehow I'm sure she knows. Ramana is up there with Gunner, Girl, Feather, Annie, Bobbie and all the others that she loved dearly. We will miss her every single day, and remember her every time we look into the faces of Blair, Shiver, Tryst, Macy and Triscuit, and into forever. The day that her co-bred Macy was BOW at the CCA, I'm positive I saw Ramana sitting in a chair at ringside, telling people about all the dogs in her pedigree.
The most important thing these amazing Collies have given us is life long friendships.
